A DIY Guide to Installing a New Showerhead

July 24th, 2012

Rather than contend with a low drizzle of water from your shower, install a new head. Showerheads are available in a wide range of styles including water conserving or massaging jets. If you have an existing shower, replacing the head is a simple project that you can do on a weekend afternoon in under an hour. Should you need to install new plumbing behind your shower, that is a more difficult task, best suited to a professional bathroom remodeling service in Charlotte like ours at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Charlotte.

The process for installing a showerhead is simple enough for even a novice DIY project. All you need to do is unscrew the old showerhead. If it refuses to come off, make sure you are turning the head counterclockwise. Should you still be unable to remove it, use pliers with the ends covered in duct tape to get a better grip on the end of the showerhead.

Once the old showerhead is off, clean the threads on the exposed pipe and wrap them with teflon tape. This will help to prevent leaks after you install the new showerhead. Screw the new head onto the end of the pipe, turning it in a clockwise direction until it is tight. Turn on the shower and check for any leaks around the new showerhead. Yes, the installation really is that simple. You don’t even need to shut off the water to the house because the taps for the shower control the water flow to the showerhead, and those will be turned off anyway.

While replacing your showerhead is a simple project, not every plumbing project around the house is. If you need assistance with installing a new shower or any other type of plumbing installation in your home, call us at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Charlotte at 704-461-1700. Leak Detection Service in Chapel Hill NC

March 23rd, 2012

Leaks cause aggravation for a homeowner and damage to the home. If you suspect a leak, the source of the leak must be found and repaired. Call Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Charlotte. We want to be your Chapel Hill NC plumber for all your plumbing repair needs.

One of the services offered by our plumbing company in Chapel Hill is leak detection. There are several types of leaks our plumbers can find and fix, but all of them need prompt repair to prevent extensive damage to your home. These include water line leaks, sewer or drain leaks, or leaking gas pipes. If the leak is a slab leak or a gas leak, it must be repaired by a professional as they are too difficult or dangerous for a homeowner to fix.

Water leaks tend to have a hard-to-find source because the water may travel along a pipe from the leak before it drips out. Our plumbers are trained to spot the identifying factors for locating the exact spot the leak began, whether it originated in a pipe, fixture, or under the slab of a foundation.

Sewer drain line leaks may allow smelly sewer gases into the house or prevent waste from properly flowing into the sewer. This type of problem must be fixed immediately as it can create a health hazard for the home, especially if the leak in the sewer line allows waste into the yard.

Leaks in the gas pipes require immediate action because the leaking gas poses a high fire or explosion hazard. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the house and call Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Charlotte for our emergency service to fix the leak quickly.

To find and fix the source of a leak, or for any other plumbing maintenance or repair, call our professional, punctual plumbers at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Charlotte at 704-461-1700.

Charlotte Home Buyer’s Value Guide to Plumbing

June 1st, 2011

It’s summer, and this is the most common time for home buyers to search the Charlotte real estate market. Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware of problems that may exist in a home that are not found by inspectors, especially plumbing leaks and poor plumbing systems. Before buying a home filled with plumbing repair needs, be sure to check out the various plumbing fixtures so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

In the bathroom, be sure to inspect the floor; look around the base of the toilet for water damage, and test to make sure there are no soft spots in the floor. These are signs of water leaks, typically existing. If you find black and white stains or rolled vinyl flooring, these are also clues that water leaks may have previously plagued the area or are currently a problem. Also be sure to press tiles on the wall to check for leaks and loose tiling. Before you move on, flush the toilet and make sure it works properly, not draining too slowly or causing water to leak.

To check for adequate piping and water pressure, turn on a bathtub faucet and the kitchen sink faucet. If the pressure is significantly reduced with both running, the piping may have a large amount of calcium and mineral deposits and need to be replaced. While you are in the kitchen, make sure the connections to the dishwasher and garbage disposal are tight and show no signs of leaks. Also, check within the cabinetry to assure there is no water damage, including stains, rotted corkboard, or sagging bottoms. Be sure to check the washing machine hose as well, since these can rupture and lead to extensive water damage.

The first four digits of the serial number on a water heater are the month and year of manufacture. If the water heater in the home is more than 15 years old, you’ll want to contact your local Charlotte plumbing company to replace it. You may also want to check for rust on the tank, as this is a sign of impending issues with the hot water heater. If you are unsure of problems you may find, you can get assistance with inspections from our Charlotte water heater technicians, available to help you assess the value of the plumbing system in your prospective home purchase.
